Carrier Compatibility

Ensuring compatibility with your mobile carrier is crucial before purchasing a Light Phone.

Key Considerations:
  • Unlocked Device: Light Phones are sold unlocked, meaning they aren't tied to a specific carrier contractually.
  • Network Bands: The phone must support the 4G LTE network bands used by your carrier in your region. Check the specific bands supported by the Light Phone model (II or III) against your carrier's network specifications.
  • VoLTE (Voice over LTE): This is critical. As 2G and 3G networks are being phased out globally, the Light Phone relies on 4G LTE for voice calls using VoLTE technology. Your carrier must support VoLTE, and your plan/SIM card must be provisioned for it. Sometimes, activating the SIM in a compatible smartphone first is necessary before moving it to the Light Phone.
  • MVNOs: If using a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO), verify their VoLTE support and compatibility specifically. Some MVNOs may have limitations compared to the main network provider they use.
  • International Use: Check band compatibility for the specific countries you intend to use the phone in.
How to Check Compatibility:
  • Visit the official Light Phone website's support or compatibility section. They usually provide detailed information and sometimes a compatibility checker tool or list.
  • Contact your carrier's technical support. Explicitly ask if they support VoLTE on unlocked devices and confirm the 4G LTE bands they use. Mention you plan to use an unlocked "minimalist phone" or "feature phone" that requires VoLTE.
Disclaimer: Compatibility can change based on carrier network updates. Always perform checks close to your time of purchase.
