Re: Landing Thread

No issue at all, I'm happy to see people like you getting involved in the creation of this community!
I'm happy to hear! For some reason, I'm super passionate about building this. Some part of me wants to stop, but I keep coming up with new ideas!
Right, as the community is small now it does not make sense to have too many different categories. I deleted the EDCs and photography ones and added a New Members category.
Makes sense. I think photography and EDC would be more suited to megathreads stickied in the lounge section. As for a good section idea, I think a technology section would be cool. We talk enough about technology and similar devices, that having dedicated, stickied threads for them in such a section would be a good idea. Not that you have to create them, but some good examples are: The Daylight Computer, Minimal Phone, Playdate, Analogue Pocket, Mudita Kompact, Ereaders, etc. It has enough unique topic potential that it warrants its own section.
I'm hosting it on an OVH VPS with 50 Gio of storage. Depending on how this community grows it could be limiting. For now I can bump the limit to 10 MBs, I feel like this is plenty for most images. Let's see how this goes. If users need more than that let me know, I'll double think about it. For information the VPS costs me 11 euros per month, additional storage is around 0,0001 € Go/hour. So not that expensive I guess.
That makes perfect sense. I think some auto compression and resize tools could help for both uploads and avatars, instead of screaming at the person they need to resize it. Perhaps that's something we can look into? There really should be no reason to go above 10 MBs now that you say it.

Also, we should look into having a community donation pool as the server gets bigger. It seems to work for other communities of this nature I've seen. Maybe using something like Liberapay or Open Collective? They seem to fit the ethos of the community pretty well.

Anywho, we should also look into more buttons? To make these forum tricks easier for new folk. Everyone's switched to markdown, and it's easy to see why. Using HTML for basic stuff is pretty exhausting, and I only have it memorized because I'm learning webdev. Not sure how to go about it, but it's definitely something to look into. But tbh, that might be solved with one of the newer themes, or something. Who knows. That's all I have for now... until the edit nation attacks.

Edit: Perhaps a sort of "level" system would be good. Not for gamification or status or anything stupid like that, but for community reliability. If I, who would probably have something like a V.I.P. role, were to say something, it'd give immediate credence to my words. This may not be as important as I think, though. I'm just used to it, and I always thought it was a good system.

Edit 2: Can you remove the file name under the images? It looks ugly, and cluttered. Also, are the view counts for them removable as well? They seem unnecessary for a community like this.

Edit 3: I just noticed this strange issue where avatars stretch on their page. Seth's did this too, before it settled down. Any idea why this happens?

I've installed a plugin that automatically resizes avatars to 90x90 pixels. This should resolve the issue with kerc's profile picture (though he'll need to re-upload his avatar for the changes to take effect).

That's definitely something worth exploring. However, I'd prefer not to implement this right away. I think it's better to let the community grow organically before asking for financial contributions. Let's wait until there's genuine interest and engagement.

Could you clarify what you mean? Do you find the phpBB WYSIWYG editor inadequate?

Let me test if inline images still show these details:

I've used similar reputation systems on other phpBB forums, so this should definitely be possible. I'll look into implementing it!

I'm of the same mindset. I moreso meant when/if the costs became significant enough to warrant such a thing.

It was a messy thought. Moreso that BBCode seemed scary for the average person and that markdown is friendlier and more well known, but it'll probably be fine. I highly doubt you could rip that out wholesale anyway.

I have nothing else aside from that added. I do wonder if we should convert this to a PM of sorts between moderators and admins, because having this public does seem a bit useless. This isn't for community discussion or anything.

Edit 1: Speaking of, what's with the PM limit? That is a rather tiny size. Can you change it? It's also a damn shame you can't react to PMs.
