Good morning starshine, the earth says "Hello!"

Post by simply-misc »

Hi all,

My name is Petal. Thanks to the creator of this forum - I hope it does well. I'm not on discord so I appreciate having another avenue to share and receive info about the LP.

I got my LP2 back in March of 2023. I had been following the Light Phone for years and always felt drawn to it, though it took some time for me to take the plunge. I sold my LP2 recently to get ahead of what I assumed would be an influx of LP2s on the market once the LP3 released and I miss it every day! It was a great 2 years with the LP2 and I imagine it'll be many more amazing years with the LP3.

For me, I realized I was sick of wasting mental effort resisting my smart phone and fighting to be present with myself and enjoy my time offline. I wanted a device where the ethos of the phone was aligned with goals, rather than a device that was constantly fighting against my goals.

What prompted you to finally take the plunge?

Welcome! :D This is precisely why the forum was created, so it's awesome we're tapping into that side of the community! Hopefully this becomes the main community hub, sooner or later.

I just realized how much time I wasted on my phone, and how bad smartphones are for us. After researching alternatives and finding Jose's channel, the Light Phone seemed perfect. I then prepared by deleting apps and lowering my screen time until the day came.

It was pretty simple for me and wasn't much of a fight, as I wasn't as absorbed into the smart ecosystem as others. I've always used local music as opposed to streaming, I didn't use digital wallets, and same goes for any of those digital niceties most have grown accustomed to.
A blob in space who's interested in the indie web, and intentional use of technology. Soon-to-be owner of the Light Phone 3. I hope we can have a good time! :D

Welcome simply-misc!

I've been fighting the same battle with smartphone addiction, and none of the software solutions worked for me either. That's why I switched to a dumbphone. The Light Phone really clicked with me - both its minimalist philosophy and clean design. Really happy to have you join our forum!
iPhone SE 2022 -> LP3 soon :D

Welcome Petal!

I agree wholeheartedly with being tired of the mental effort - that's why I bought my current dumbphone (a Keitai Digno A202KC). No choices, no limiting myself - it limits me. A little too much at times, with the camera in particular. I had come to the realization I don't want my smartphone anymore when I started observing when I use my phone the most... when I'm uncomfortable. Anxious in a new situation? Bored for a few minutes? Afraid I might miss out on something? Feeling lonely? The answer to any of those would be my phone. It was... suffocating once I figured that out. Everyone has to be uncomfortable sometimes, but it's best to deal with it. Especially boredom, which I find to be quite fun in its weird roundabout way. I hope I continue to be bored with my LPIII :lol:.

I wish I could have had the LPII in its heyday - I only really got the Digno to hold me over for the time being after pre-ordering the LPIII. Hope you're getting yours soon!

By the way - that quote in your title is from Charlie & The Chocolate Factory, right?

Such a valid insight. I know this is true for me. Strange that it's so difficult to just be by myself and within myself sometimes.
