Just wanted to make a post that centralizes the ideas and creation of this community, since basing our discussions through Discord seems counterintuitive.

I'm a bit strapped for time, but my first suggestion is to capitalize all the main topics. Also, we should look into some generic theme implementations before we make our own custom one. . Some custom emotes too, perhaps? I think that's a good start.

For capitalization, it'd be the second one.

I don't have many emote ideas, were there many in the Discord Server? If not, a fun idea might be to ask Joe and see if we can the B&L LP emotes. They do have those now, right? I swear there was mention of new, custom emotes. Maybe the LP logo and some of the other small, branding elements.

Also, is there any way to edit those pesky avatar constraints? I forget how annoying the old internet was about specific sizes. I definitely think that will be a deterrent for a lot of forum newbies.

I cannot emphasize how cozy it feels to be on a forum. Discord really makes me want to bash my head in. :?

I'm going to increase the limit of the avatars.

Yes forum is so much nicer, and I feel like it helps with FOMO a lot more than discord. No pressure to always connect to make sure you don't miss a message.

EDIT : increased limit to 800x800 pixels and 500kB max. Should be ok for most images, if not let me know

I think Modding & Hacking should be under LightOS, but maybe the actual Modding and Hacking community differs in opinion. It'd be best to ask someone like Dylan if/once they sign up. There's disadvantages to a singular thread vs. dedicated threads, and we can figure that out as we go along.

Who knows, but the PFP size should probably be pretty limitless. I am also realizing there's no native cropper here, oof. Is there a way to integrate one of those, or no? There's a lot of modern niceties (seemingly) unavailable in this older software. Are there extensions and other things we can look into? I am not too familiar with this platform, but I've seen many lovely implementations on my forum journey.

I think above FOMO or whatever, it's the slower, more meaningful flow for me. I have actually taken time to slow down, and better compose my thoughts in this reply. As opposed to Discord, where I'm trying to get my thoughts out as quickly as possible so my message doesn't get lost in the endless sea of other messages. Convos and topics die so quickly that attempting to maintain them across days can be pretty rough.

I know about that site, the only issue is newer users, but it can be worked out. We can always compare and contrast, and weigh what the people want as more join.

Are you still in the Discord? If so, how are people responding to it? Do you plan to stay in Discord? After all, promoting it without being in the already existing community is sorta hard. Would love to know what you have planned.

I'm still somewhat active on Discord to gauge reactions. Some people have expressed excitement, which is encouraging! I agree that we need momentum to motivate people to migrate, as the community here is currently nonexistent. It will take time, but I don't think that's a major issue. What we primarily need are important announcements posted here first so we don't have to constantly check Discord every 15 minutes for updates.

Additionally, when people search for issues or questions about the LP and get redirected here, that should help grow the community by bringing in new users.

To be honest, I haven't planned anything specific yet. I'm mainly waiting to see if enough people are willing to make the switch and then see what develops!

I did plan to leave for today, but I found it irritating how I couldn't like your post to indicate I had read it without needing to reply. Now that could be for the better, but I did find this. :!:

Edit 1: Maybe we should edit the F.A.Q. to make it more Light-specific? Or even make a Support F.A.Q. thread outlining the common problems/errors with the LP2/3, and known solutions?

Edit 2: I also wonder what should and shouldn't be a category. In Discord, an EDC channel makes sense. But in something like a forum, having many separate posts of EDCs seems kind of pointless. At that point it's like Reddit and flairs. We should consider what makes sense as its own category as opposed to lets say, a pinned post in the general off topic categories.

Edit 3: I noticed there is a limit of 256kbs on the upload of files. I think it'd be better to bump it to 5-10 MBs, or maybe 25MBs like old Discord. All depends on how you're hosting it. Is this local, or a VPS? How much storage does it have?

Also, WEBP is an unsupported format. That should be changed, for obvious reasons.

I know an older forum I played a part in reviving faced an influx of bots when it was dead. Maybe this software is just privy to that? I don't know, but it's something to keep in mind. I am unsure if Discourse or Flarum have this same issue.

Edit 5: We should add an introductions section somewhere. All community-driven forums have one, and I think it'd be a good fit. Plus, it helps familiar faces reunite and talk. Perhaps it'd work best under Community Connections?

Edit 6: I found a good repository of themes, this now explains why all the other phpbb forums I saw looked so nice. Maybe we could do a community poll on which would be preferred, unless you want to take a crack at making our own. :lol:

Right, as the community is small now it does not make sense to have too many different categories. I deleted the EDCs and photography ones and added a New Members category.

I'm hosting it on an OVH VPS with 50 Gio of storage. Depending on how this community grows it could be limiting. For now I can bump the limit to 10 MBs, I feel like this is plenty for most images. Let's see how this goes. If users need more than that let me know, I'll double think about it. For information the VPS costs me 11 euros per month, additional storage is around 0,0001 € Go/hour. So not that expensive I guess.

Also, WEBP is an unsupported format. That should be changed, for obvious reasons.

No worries, it's a feature of phpbb, here is a little explanation by Claude :

BingBot for phpBB is an add-on that helps your forum work better with Microsoft's Bing search engine. It creates sitemaps so Bing can find and index all your forum content, improves search results on your forum, and can provide analytics about Bing visitors. It's not built into phpBB by default but can be installed as an extension through your Admin Control Panel. It's useful if you want to increase your forum's visibility in Bing search results.
