Finding a New Theme for Our Light Phone Forum

Post by ronan »

Hello everyone!

I'm excited to announce that we're looking to refresh the look of our forum with a new theme! This is a great opportunity for us to make our community space more visually appealing and user-friendly.

ShinRyusei has already suggested checking out themes from ThemeForest: https://themeforest.net/category/forums/phpbb

Here's how we'll proceed:
1. Please share your theme suggestions in this thread (with links if possible)
2. Include what you like about the theme and why you think it would work well for our community
3. In two weeks, we'll create a poll with the most popular suggestions for everyone to vote on

When suggesting themes, consider:
- Mobile responsiveness (many of us likely browse on our phones)
- Readability and clean design
- Compatibility with our current phpBB version (3.3.14)

I'm looking forward to seeing your suggestions and creating a better forum experience for everyone in our Light Phone community!

Happy theme hunting!

Whooooa, the minimal theme looks so fantastic. I saw the styles DB, but all the ones at top were so crap I figured nothing of worth was there. Maybe I should've looked more. I'm pretty partial to that one until we find something else. Only thing I'd say is to change the blue bits to black, add the Light Phone logo, and see how we can go about making a dark mode. Maybe we can ask Joe for the Light Phone font so we can customize the website a bit? If such a thing doesn't exist, maybe we can see to its creation?

I'll probably look around more later, but I'd like to see what others have to suggest before I say anything. I've already said so much, after all.

If there is a theme that looks like LightOS, that would be a nice touch.

My personal two cents is to start with the minimal theme, but we keep this as an active discussion and thread. The minimal theme looks Light adjacent, is free, and we could make some modifications to further hone that Light feel. Black and white coloring, text, a dark mode, remove the name and replace it fully with the logo, etc. I only say this to avoid looking incredibly basic and dated until we finalize and mature the sort of look we want for this forum.

The Sitesplat themes have an interesting extension.

I was curious about this, as while the smilies are nostalgic, there's such a limited range compared to modern emoji sets. Also if you delete the smilies, apparently doing stuff like : smile : (without spaces) will get you native emoji support. I was double curious about this because the smiles are completely incongruent with the reaction system you implemented. UX consistency, and all.

What do you guys think ? Should we add these modern emojis ?

My personal point of view : even if the current set is limited I find it enough for our usage and feels more inegrated in the platform (and it's nostalgic :P ).

On another subject another theme I found :

https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/style/basic/

EDIT: I just saw that I can easily change reaction emoji images if needed

We can always make a poll to see what the people want in regards to emojis. Imo I valuable functionality and overall value over nostalgia, but we'll see what the majority thinks. I think a thinking emoji would be good to add to the reaction pool.

Also, that's a nice theme.

Love the new theme, very clean and minimal. Haven't used phpbb in over a decade so can't remember how much editing is possible, just the resolution feels too narrow for modern desktop devices. I had to zoom twice in my 14 inch laptop to make it comfortable for reading.

And I feel the margins pretty much everywhere are too small.

Thanks for your feedback ! Everything is css + html so everything is editable, I only need time to make changes :D

We you say you had to zoom twice, do you mean your browser zoom level was 120% ?

EDIT: I've setupped a new plugin so that anyone can set the font size he wants.

For this go to your control panel :

And navigate to Board Preferences, there you can enable different font sizes :

Let me know if it works for you !
